Can anyone visit?
Visiting is unfortunately restricted to immediate family only and at certain times. Please visit the Visiting ICU page for more details. Please ask the bedside nurse for particular arrangements.
How should we keep our family up to date?
We ask that the family or friends of the patient nominate one person who can phone the unit and pass the information on. This will save us repeating the same information to many different people and minimise time away from the bedside.
Can I help?
While your family member is in intensive care you may want to help with the care being given. This could involve simple mouth care or helping to wash them. This would be done under the supervision of a nurse.
The nurse will be able to advise and discuss this with you.
Of course looking after your own health is most helpful.
Can my family member hear me?
Some critical care medications will keep a patient deeply asleep. However, you should always assume that the patient can hear you and understand everything that you are saying.
Do feel free to talk to your family member. Do not be afraid to touch your relative or friend. It may be comforting for both of you.
